THE FALL: ISAIAH POV

CHAPTER 1

26/06/2003

"Please, help me!" An injured woman who appeared no older than forty, covered in blood, stood outside my window, pleading for assistance. It was evident she had suffered a head wound and bruises were starting to form around her eyes where she either took a blow to the head from the steering wheel or the airbags caught her off guard, like they did me. Her right hand hung limply by her side, suggesting a possible break; I assumed. She wasn’t ok and neither were we.

In a panic, she informed me that her husband is unresponsive. As she stepped aside, I could see her vehicle bedise mine, a total wreckage; air bags blown with the door crushed inwards, where her husband sat in the passenger seat; motionless, a haunting stillness in his eyes with blood; his blood, seeping through the crushed door. The vehicle in front of us was also mangled, but thankfully vacant; where the passengers had gotten themselves to a safer place on the verge. It became clear that we were in a precarious situation, in urgent need of help.

"Call for help!" Caleb urgently insisted, but Tessa, already with her phone in hand, realised the lack of signal bars, making the situation even more pressing.

"Get out!" the lady stepped back, fear etched on her face as a bright light illuminated her blood-red face, growing brighter by the second. A horn blared, sending shivers through the tree leaves, a grim realisation dawning upon me. The tires of a lorry screeched against the concrete, the driver desperately trying to halt its path. Unfortunately, effort proved futile. The inevitable collision occurred, engulfing us, including the lady who had implored us to save her husband mere moments ago. Her name remained a mystery to us, but what remained crystal clear was that I was the last person she locked eyes with.

Tessa's panicked voice called out my name as the chaos unfolded around us, Caleb's silence adding to the tension in the air. The lorry's impact sent the truck into a terrifying series of flips, each turn accompanied by the jarring crash of shattering windows. Glass fragments danced in the air within the vehicle, as the cacophony of the accident outside filled the space. The scraping of metal against asphalt, the cries of trapped individuals being dragged, and the desperate attempts at escape formed a dissonant symphony of disaster. Amidst the chaos, a sense of guilt gnawed at me, knowing that a moment of yielding could have averted this calamity.

We had left the concrete behind and now found ourselves descending the steep, mountanious road surrounded by dense forest.

Something followed us down; a sleek silver car we must have clipped was now hurtling down the hill alongside us. Amidst the chaos, the muffled cries of Tessa could be discerned as she was tossed about like a rag doll, the sounds of bark craking intermixed with the cacophony of metal tearing through the once serene and lush forest.

The noise halted; I couldn’t hear Caleb. I listened for Tessa, but I couldn’t hear her, I couldn’t see her. Frantically scanning the area beside me in search of her familiar presence, a sudden impact to the back of my head sent me reeling. My vision blurred, eventually consumed by an impenetrable darkness.
